Medical Requirements |
A South African Aviation Medical can be completed prior to arriving at Cape Flying Services but we can arrange for it to be completed on your arrival and the certificate issued the same day. It is advisable to complete the medical before arriving in George to ensure that the commencement of your training is not delayed due to unforeseen circumstances regarding your medical report.
This examination is in line with and in some respects exceeds the requirements of most foreign aviation medicals, including those of the UK CAA and the FAA. The cost varies from doctor to doctor but should cost about R1000.00 in total.
The medical must include the following :
a. A chest X-ray report
b. Stress Electrocardiograph
c. Lung function test
d. Visual and Audio examinations
e. Gynaecological (females only)

C.A.A Requirements and Regulations Student Pilot Licence |
The student must :
- be in possession of a Student Pilot Licence to enable him/her to fly solo.
- pass written exams on Checks and Procedures, Air Law and Aircraft Technical and General.
- have completed flying training procedures up to spin and elementary fire drill.
- have sufficient experience of radio telephony procedures for solo flight.

C.A.A Requirements for a SA Private Pilot Licence (PPL) |
The student must :

C.A.A Requirements for a SA Professional Pilots Licence (CPL) |
The student must :
- be 18 years old or older
- pass a Commercial Pilot (class 1) Medical Examination
- hold a current General Radio Telephony Certificate
- have logged a minimum of 200 hours of flying time including :
- 100 hours as pilot in command
- 10 hours night flying including cross country as Pilot In Command
- 20 hours of cross country as Pilot In Command
- 20 hours of Instrument flying (of which maximum 10 on simulator
- Pass the C.A.A. examinations
- Pass the Commercial Flight Test with a C.A.A. approved examiner
C.A.A. Flight Tests are undertaken in a Variable Pitch/Retractable Undercarriage aircraft - single or multi-engined aircraft. |

Professional Pilots Licence with Instrument Rating(CPL-IR) |
The student:
- should meet the requirements for the Commercial Pilots Licence as above but must have :
- A total of 50 hours solo cross country
- A total of 40 hours instrument flying (of which a maximum of 20 hours may be on a simulator)
- Passed the Instrument Rating Flight Test with an Examiner

Conversions |
- Night Rating - 15 hours including 10 hours instrument training
- Multi-engine conversion - 10 hours flight training
In order to obtain the above conversions, the student must be a holder of a South African Private Pilots License. |

Radio Telephony Licence |
To qualify for the PPL, you must be in possession of a Restricted Aeronautical Radio Operators Licence. Radio courses are given by our own Radio Designated Examiner and held at Cape Flying Services. After 6 to 8 lectures you will qualify for our RT by passing a written and practical exam. Having achieved this you qualify for the Radio Operators Licence.
